Conditions

Conditions, in plain language

Each page covers what the condition is, how it shows up, how we test for it and what treatment involves. Almost everything on this list responds well to treatment, and the few that stay with you can be managed.

STIs

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a common bacterial sexually transmitted infection that often causes no symptoms and is cured with a short course of antibiotics.

Gonorrhoea

Gonorrhoea is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection that can cause discharge and painful urination, is often silent in the throat or rectum, and is treated with an antibiotic injection plus tablets.

Syphilis

Syphilis is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection that progresses in stages, beginning with a painless sore, and is cured with penicillin injections.

HIV

HIV is a virus that weakens the immune system over time; with modern antiretroviral treatment, people with HIV live full lives with a normal life expectancy.

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a viral infection of the liver, often silent, that spreads through sex and blood contact and is preventable with a safe, effective vaccine.

Genital herpes is a common viral infection causing recurring painful blisters or ulcers, manageable with antiviral tablets although not curable.

Genital Warts (HPV)

Genital warts are soft, flesh-coloured growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), treatable with creams, freezing or removal, and largely preventable by vaccination.

Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is a curable parasitic sexually transmitted infection that can cause frothy discharge and itching, and is often silent in men.

Erectile dysfunction is persistent difficulty getting or keeping an erection firm enough for sex, and in most men it has an identifiable, treatable cause.

Premature Ejaculation

Premature ejaculation is ejaculating sooner than you or your partner would like, usually within a minute or two of penetration, and it is common and treatable.

Menopause & Perimenopause

Menopause is the point when periods stop permanently, and perimenopause is the hormonal transition before it; symptoms of both are real and very treatable.

PCOS/PMOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS/PMOS) is a common hormonal condition causing irregular periods, acne, excess hair and sometimes fertility difficulty, and it is very manageable with the right plan.
