Frequently asked

Is HRT safe?

For most healthy women within ten years of menopause, current evidence supports HRT as a safe and effective treatment for menopausal symptoms, and for many women the benefits outweigh the risks. Safety is individual, which is why your doctor reviews your personal and family history before prescribing and prefers transdermal oestrogen where suitable.

Does HRT cause breast cancer?

The picture is more nuanced than the headlines. Oestrogen-only HRT has shown little to no increase in breast cancer risk in major studies. Combined HRT is associated with a small increase with longer use, on the order of a few extra cases per thousand women, similar in scale to lifestyle factors such as alcohol. Your doctor will put the numbers in context for your history.

When should I start thinking about HRT?

When symptoms start affecting your life, which is often in perimenopause, before periods stop. You do not need to wait for a final period or a particular age. Starting within ten years of menopause is associated with the most favourable balance of benefit and risk.

Are there non-hormonal options?

Yes. Certain non-hormonal prescription medicines reduce hot flushes, vaginal moisturisers help with dryness, and CBT-based approaches help with sleep and mood symptoms. If HRT is not suitable or not wanted, your doctor will build a plan from these instead.

Can PVT help with PCOS/PMOS if I am not trying to fall pregnant?

Yes. PCOS/PMOS care is not only about fertility. Managing irregular cycles, acne, excess hair and long-term metabolic health matters at every stage, and your plan is built around your current goals, which can change over time.
