Every consultation begins with a confidential discussion about your health and any concerns you may have. Where appropriate, your doctor will perform an examination and recommend the laboratory investigations needed to answer your questions with confidence.
Testing may involve blood samples, urine tests and swabs, depending on your presentation. All investigations are processed by an accredited South African pathology laboratory.
Once your results are available, your doctor will explain them clearly and discuss any treatment, prevention or follow-up that may be required. Your consultation and results remain strictly confidential.

Frequently asked
How soon after exposure can I test?
It depends on the infection. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are reliably detectable from about two weeks after exposure. A fourth-generation HIV test is conclusive by 45 days. Syphilis can take up to six weeks. Your doctor will map your exposure dates to the right tests and tell you if a recheck is needed.
Is the visit really confidential?
Yes. You see a doctor in a private room, your file is protected under POPIA and medical confidentiality, and results go only to you. Nothing is shared with a partner, employer or family member without your written consent.
What appears on my medical aid statement?
You pay the practice upfront and claim back yourself, so nothing reaches your scheme unless you submit the invoice. The invoice is issued by Dr D Moodley Inc with standard consultation codes and does not mention PVT or STI testing. laboratory bills its lab tests separately.
How long do results take?
Most results return within one to three working days. HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B bloods are usually back within 24 to 48 hours. Molecular tests for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomonas and mycoplasma can take up to three days. Your doctor contacts you as soon as everything is in.
Do I need to abstain from sex or stop urinating before the test?
For a urine test it helps not to urinate for about an hour beforehand. You do not need to abstain from sex before testing, although recent exposure may sit inside a window period, in which case your doctor will advise a recheck date.
What if something comes back positive?
Almost every STI is treatable, and most bacterial infections clear completely with a short course of the right antibiotic. Your doctor explains the result, treats you or refers where needed, helps you plan partner notification, and books a recheck to confirm the infection has cleared.
